This original video series is, in the real world, the latest chapter in the Universal Century saga. It takes place in the same One Year War era as the original series, depicting the point of view of the common soldier rather than the cosmic adventures of newtype aces. 08th MS Team bears the distinction of being the longest-running Gundam video series. As of this writing it's been running for two and a half years, and it's still only two-thirds of the way through the story. The July 1996 death of director Takeyuki Kanda, a robot-show veteran, surely didn't help the production schedule. Though the series proper debuted in January 1996, a preview version of the first episode was released the previous month as part of the "OVA Gundam Go! 1 Million Copies" promotion.
